The client

David Lloyd Clubs is one of Europe’s most established health and fitness brands, operating more than 130 locations across the UK and the continent. Alongside its premium gyms, pools and racquet facilities, the organisation places strong emphasis on giving back through its Do Good initiative, which encourages every club to champion local charities and community programmes.

With thousands of colleagues and members taking part, the impact of these efforts is significant, from charity challenges and sponsored events to volunteering and support for neighbourhood groups. Coordinating, tracking and showcasing this activity across a large network of sites, however, presented a considerable challenge.

The challenge

Before the new solution was introduced, recording charitable work across more than 130 clubs was inconsistent and labour-intensive. Teams relied on emails, spreadsheets and paper forms, which meant a large amount of valuable community activity went untracked and unrecognised. David Lloyd needed a dependable, central system that would allow clubs to log actions, monitor donations and show impact, while making use of the Microsoft 365 tools they already had. The platform also had to be intuitive and scalable so that meaningful reporting could be delivered across the organisation.

Through David Lloyd’s existing support contract, the business already had access to consultancy time for projects and technical guidance. When the opportunity came to build the Do Good app, this established relationship meant our team had a clear understanding of David Lloyd’s operations and technology landscape.

The solution

Our team worked with David Lloyd Clubs to create a tailored Do Good app using the Microsoft Power Platform, with Power Apps and Power BI at its core. By building the solution within the existing M365 environment, David Lloyd avoided the cost of external development and gained a fully integrated system for accurate and consistent reporting.

Every club can now access the app directly, giving managers and teams a straightforward way to record their community activities. Events are logged through a clear, structured form that captures the nature of the activity along with any funds raised, with the currency noted for accuracy.

The app also features a comprehensive reporting suite. Administrators can review all submitted events by category, monitor key information and track total fundraising figures. Results can be compared with previous periods, such as earlier years or quarters, offering a clear view of progress and the overall contribution across the organisation.

“When we’re reporting to stakeholders, we need clear evidence of the impact we’re making, and the Do Good app has become the governance of everything. It’s vital to what we do.”

Luke Freer, Head of Community at David Lloyd Clubs

The results

Since the launch of the app, the results have been significant. Highlights include:

  • More than £2.7 million raised through fundraising, contributions and donations, along with €105,000 across Europe in 2024
  • Substantial support for charities such as Great Ormond Street Hospital (£44,000), New Life (£43,000) and Change Please (£130,000)
  • 9,583 people involved in community initiatives, including over 6,500 team members

With more than 2,000 charitable activities recorded each year, the Do Good app now plays a central role in how David Lloyd captures, understands and celebrates its social contribution. It gives local clubs the tools to drive positive change while ensuring strong governance at a national level.

Luke Freer, Head of Community at David Lloyd, said: “The app has been a lifesaver – it’s a game changer for us. Previously, if it wasn’t written down, it might as well have never happened. When we’re reporting to stakeholders, we need clear evidence of the impact we’re making, and the Do Good app has become the governance of everything. Before, it was just bits of paper and emails; now we have a platform that makes reporting and accountability simple and robust. The build was faultless – quick, well designed and tested – and overall, it’s transformed how we track impact and deliver social value across the UK and Europe. It’s vital to what we do.”

The David Lloyd team is already considering future improvements, including the introduction of social value metrics and the option to upload media to help bring local stories to life.

The introduction of the app has completely reshaped the way community activity is tracked and reported. A previously manual and inconsistent process is now streamlined, reliable and fully auditable. The platform enhances oversight, improves reporting and allows clubs to highlight the meaningful difference they make in their local areas. With continued support from Perspicuity, David Lloyd is well positioned to develop the app further and increase transparency and social value across all sites.
